About Us

The Global Alliance for Behavioral Health and Social Justice was founded as the American Orthopsychiatric Association in 1923 and renamed in 2016. The Global Alliance is an interdisciplinary membership organization of individuals committed to addressing some of society's most challenging issues through research, policy development, and practice. Through conferences, symposia, publications, interest groups, task forces, and other activities, the Global Alliance has applied principles of social justice to a wide range of issues affecting children, adolescents, adults, families, schools, community mental health, and life span development.

A review of the first 50 years of the Orthopsychiatry revealed that the Association and its Journal, the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, have consistently demonstrated a commitment to the least fortunate members of society by strengthening knowledge of effective and respectful services for people, advocating for prevention, providing leadership for social change, and explicating the core interests that are most fundamental to people's sense of dignity and worth. We celebrate our rich legacy and invite you to join us as we forge new directions in the 21st century.
