On Saturday, January 9, 2021, the Global Alliance issued a statement entitled "Defending Our Democracy" in response to the events in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, and those leading up to that day:

For 98 years, the leadership and members of the Global Alliance have worked for policies and taken actions that support social justice, protect human rights, and promote the well-being of all. We are appalled by the unacceptable actions and events leading up to and including Wednesday’s assault on our democracy. We saw leaders and their followers sow hatred and an erosion of trust in our public institutions; seek to divide further a nation challenged by meaningful issues, from racial injustices and economic immobility to a tenacious pandemic; and disgracefully display white nationalism and White Supremacy. The events that have played out in recent months underscore the divisions in our country not only in views but in experiences, including disparities in the responses of our public systems, from health care to law enforcement.

Free and safe elections and the peaceful resolution of differences are at the heart of democracy. What happened Wednesday on Capitol Hill goes against all for which a democratic society stands, and we strongly condemn it.  We support peaceful protest. We support exercising one's voice. We support disagreement. The exercise of these rights must occur with civility, with respect for one another and with an appreciation of the foundation elements of a democratic republic.

Recent events remind us that we cannot take democracy for granted. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." The challenges that remain are substantial, but there have also been significant strides in recent months. We now have a Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C. Many Confederate monuments have been removed. A new flag will soon fly over Mississippi...

Our work will not be easy and it will not be quick. However, with your contributions, the Global Alliance will continue to raise its voice, louder and stronger, to defend our democracy and our core ideals of social justice and human rights.
